How do I request approval to ship a restricted commodity?

Modified on Fri, 13 Dec, 2024 at 2:17 PM

When using the UPS Forwarding Hub (UFH) to get a quote, it's important to know that some commodities have regulatory, hazard, safety and/or precautions, that UPS must take into consideration before agreeing to transport the commodity. These items require approval by our regulatory, risk management, and legal experts before we can accept transporting the goods.

When requesting a rate quote and you are prompted that a commodity is restricted and requires approval follow the steps below.

Important: You will not be able to obtain instant rates, but your request will process as a customized rate request. Customized rates can take up to 48 hours to process.

Instructions to Request a Restricted Commodity Approval

STEP 1: 'Initiate a Quote' in UFH to provide the following:

  • Select a Mode
  • Shipment/Route details
  • Payment Terms

STEP 2:  Under 'Commodity Information' search for your commodity.  If your commodity is restricted, you will receive the following message. Click 'Customer Support'

STEP 3: Use the 'Restricted Commodity Approval Form' to submit a ticket and request approval.

To help process your request and avoid delays please provide the following supporting information, as applicable, so our experts can make the best determination.

  • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
  • Picture of goods to be approved
  • Any additional supporting documentation

STEP 4: Return to the quote screen and finish processing your request for rates.  Once you submit your customized request our UPS Supply Chain experts will follow-up with you within 48hrs.
